The company began as one hospital, founded by the community and built on a site at Huntington Avenue and 50th Street in Newport News, Virginia. The first graduation of the Training School for Nurses -- one graduate -- was in 1918. In 1962, the hospital was relocated to the present site of Riverside Regional Medical Center in central Newport News.

BAKER, Loyce Outland Loyce Outland Baker a long time resident of Clinton died Friday, (July 27, 2007) at Middlesex Hospital. She was the loving wife of Col. Warren S. Baker, Jr. who passed away a year ago in June. She is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-laws, Warren and Maryellen Baker and Charles and Barbara Baker; her sister, Selma Graves of Richmond, Virginia; and granddaughters, Sarah Baker and Lauren Baker. She was the daughter of John Bernard Outland and Selma Riddick Outland of Virginia. Her brother John Outland, Jr. died in 1973. A graduate of Chowan University, Murfreesboro, North Carolina, she trained as a nurse at Riverside Hospital School of Nursing, Newport News, VA and served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II as an air evacuation nurse where her commanding officer introduced her to future her husband. You may remember her in the Clinton Tax Collectors office where she assisted her husband. She loved to play bridge with friends. She always enjoyed people and corresponded and visited the friends made over her lifetime. Family and friends may call on Wednesday, August 1st from 5 p.m. until the time of a memorial service at 7 p.m. at the Swan Funeral Home, 80 East Main St., Clinton. Burial with full military honors will be held at the National Cemetery in Arlington in August. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial contribution to any charity that you wish.

Protestant Chaplain Administers Rites in Military Nuptials

In one of the most impressive ceremonies ever held in the Post Chapel, Warren Sears Baker, Jr., Lt. Col., and Loyce Estelle Outland, Lt. in the Army Nurse Corps were united in marriage at the Post Chapel Saturday night.
Chaplain Joseph W. Peoples performed the double ring ceremony before the alter which bore candelabra holding white tapers, and was decorated with smilax and other flowers.
The bride was given away by Lt. Col. James H. Armstrong, former GAAF Post Surgeon, who came from Craig Field for the occasion. She wore a wedding gown of ivory slipper satin, made on empire lines with the full skirt ending in a long train. The tight-fitting bodice was embroidered in seed pearls and sleeves which ended in calla lily points over her hands. The veil of illusion and chantille lace was caught to a dainty tiara of seed pearls. She carried a bride's bouquet of gardenias, roses, and bridal wreath.
Lt. Kay Custer, of Shillington, Pa., was matron of honor. She wore a frock of sunlight yellow net with tiny matching hat and carried an arm bouquet of pastel shaded flowers in tones of blue and pale pink.
The bridesmaids and matrons were Lt. Margaret Kolosko, Lt. Agnes T. Hickey and Mrs. L. C. Doerr. They wore frocks of sky blue net, made with tiny matching hats carried arm bouquets identical with that of the matron of honor.
The best man was Major John C McConneloug; groomsmen were Maj. L. C. Doerr, Major Roscoe Blackledge, and Major Andrew Santagini.
The guard of honor, which formed an arch of inside the church, was composed of Maj. Jesse L. Hardin, Maj. Arthur A. James, Captain Welles T. Seller, Maj. Roy H. Scott, Major Willis Harpster, and Captain Robert G. Turner, and Capt. Tillman J. Cavert.
Major Fred Schoenoerg sang "I Love Thee" and "Oh Promise Me" be fore the entrance of the bridal party. He was accompanied by Lt. LeRoy Johnson, who also played the traditional wedding marches.
Immediately after the ceremony a reception was held at the Officer's Club which was decorated with southern smilax and white gladioli.
The receiving line was made up of members of the wedding party. The bride's table arranged at one end of the room was covered with a white lace table cloth and held the three-tiered wedding cake in the center. The table was decorated with dainty arrangements of mixed spring flowers. The bride cut the cake with a saber.
Among the out-of-town guests attending were Lieutenant Colonel James H. Armstrong, and Major John McConneloug, Craig Field Ala.

Mrs. John Faircloth announced the engagement and approaching marriage of here neice, Lt. Loyce Estelle Outland to Lt. Col. Warren S, Baker, Jr.
The marriage will be solemnized March 10, at 8 in the evening at the post chapel, Greenville Army Air Field, Greenville, Miss.
Lt. Outland was graduated from Newport News high school in 1939, attended Chowan junior college, and was graduated from School of Nursing, Riverside Hospital, in 1941, and has since that time has been a member of the Army Nurses Corps. Lt. Outland is stated at Greenville Army Air Field, Greenfield, Miss.
Col. Baker was graduated from Massachusetts State in 1938 and entered the 6th Calvary at fort Orglethorpe, Georgia. He received his pilot training at Randolph and Kelly Fields, Texas, receiving his wings on July 26, 1940. Col. Baker has served on various assignments at Southern airfields and at present is deputy commander of Greenville Army Air Field.
