• He was educated at North Carolina Military Institute after 1860 in Charlotte, North Carolina. 2 Daniel Harvey Hill (1821-1889) founded the North Carolina Military Institute basing its academic and disciplinary structures on the West Point model; however, the start of the Civil War necessitated the faculty and pupils to take up arms.

• He served in the military Private, Co C, 18th Mississippi Regiment 1861 to 9 Apr 1863 in Mississippi. 2

• He served in the military 1st Lt, Calvalry, CSA on 9 Apr 1863 in Mississippi. 2

• He served in the military Aide-de-Camp to Gen James R. Chalmers Oct 1863 to 15 Dec 1864 in Mississippi. 2

• He served in the military Capt, commander C Co., 18th Mississippi Calvary on 15 Dec 1864 in Mississippi. 2
