From "Ipswich in the Bay Colony" by Waters
Pgs 10-11 John Winthrop Jr. was selected as leader to establish "the planting at Agawam" (Ipswich, MA) "lest an enemy (French) should prevent them by taking possession of the place." "Twelve men were assigned to him", one of whom was John Gage.
Page 16 John Gage had a 16 acre lot on what is now Mannings Neck(1905)
Page 56 "The first public official appointed was a Clerk in 1634.The "lot-layers" appear at this time--a committee to assign lands. The first governing body was called the "Seven Men" and included John Gage. Lot laying was incidental, as the grants were decided in an open meeting. The "lot-layers" determined the bounds. John Gage was also a "lot-layer." The location, bounds, etc., of John Gage's lot are described in the book.
In 1637 a petition was signed in order to influence John Winthrop Sr., hoping to have John Winthrop Jr. remain in Ipswich. John Gage signed the petition. A copy of it appears in "A Sketch of John Winthrop theYounger 1606-1676", printed for the Ipswich Historical Society, #VII, 1900, written by Thomas Franklin Waters. Goodspeeds Book Shop might have it.
