• He served in the military Private First Class, 8th Tank Battalion, 4th Armoured Division in 1943 in Lorraine, France. The main body of troops sailed from Boston 29 December 1943. The division disembarked in Wales and entrained for camps in Wiltshire, Chippenham, Trowbridge, Devizes and Bath, England.

The 4th Armored became part of VIII Corps in Gen. Patton's Third Army.
Tanks from the 8th Tank Battalion. rumbled into the Moselle Valley at Bayon, south of Nancy on 11 Sept 1944. In November the battalion captured Destry, Morhange, and overrun Guebling after bitter fighting. They pushed to the Sarre River where the 8th Tank seized Fenetrange on Thanksgiving Day.
The 8th Tank Battalion and the 10th Armormer Infantry Battalion took the village of Chaumont, which changed hands three times before the rubble heaps were taken, December 23-26 to relive the entrapped US Army at Bastogne.

• He served in the military 4th Armored Division, 51st Armored Infantry Battalion and 8th Tank Battalion 15 Apr 1941 to Jul 1944. 4th Armored Division was activated 15 April 1941 at Pine Camp, New York. The 4th Armored Division trained in New York for 16 months before reaching the Tennessee manoeuvres in the Cumberland Mountains. In mid-November 1942 the division moved to the Mojave Desert Training Center. After six months of rugged desert training, The 4th Armored Division arrived at Camp Bowie, Texas in June 1943, and manoeuvred during a broiling summer and fall until alerted for overseas duty in November.
